I cannot wait to catch another sale on organic cherries again!
Good thing Chris is not a fan of cherries. I had these babies all to myself!
Yesterday, for breakfast, I made a simple bowl of cherry almond oatmeal. I’m still on the 1/2 rolled oats, 1/2 oat bran kick and dousing the top of my bowl with ice cold milk. It helps cool things off and makes breakfast oh, so creamy. I mixed in cherries at the end of cooking and used them as a topping. Also added, was a heaping scoop of homemade, plain roasted almond butter.
Pitting cherries is not fun, but this bowl was worth the annoyance + the stained cutting board.
Cherry Almond Oatmeal
- 1/4c rolled oats
- 1/4c oat bran
- 1c milk of choice
- 1/2-3/4c water
- 3/4c pitted cherries
- 1/2t vanilla extract
- 1/16t almond extract
- 2T protein powder [optional]
- Bring oats, oat bran, milk + water to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer, whisking frequently.
- Cook for 7-10min, and just before done, stir in cherries, vanilla + almond extract [and protein powder if using].
- Cook for 1 more minute, then pour into a bowl, top with extra milk and whatever other toppings you want.
Also on top, Love Grown Foods Cocoa Goodness. The hint of chocolate was divine!
Simply delicious.

We had the exact same thing for breakfast this morning! Great minds… Hope you enjoyed it – we did.
Mmm this looks awesome. I had cherries and yogurt the other morning and it was divine – how have I not thought to add them to oats!
fresh cherries sure add a lovely POP of color to the pics
Love Grown granola seems to be on everyone’s list these days…I might have to see for myself.
I would tell you this looks delicious, but you already know that.
It’s the best! They’re based out of Denver and I met them last year at a local farmers market. They freaking rock!
My parents just gave me a bunch of cherries from their tree. I’ve gotta add it to my morning oats, so yummy!
Ooooh, super local cherries..yum!
YUM! I love how cherries can bring any dish to the next level! even oatmeal
That looks delicious. I’ve never tried cherries on oatmeal, but I think I need to change that ASAP!
I love that there are things that I adore that the husband won’t eat! ….More for ME!
I love cherries! Regarding pitting them, do you have a cherry pitter? My mom has a simple Pampered Chef one and it makes the job so much easier!
Nope! I would love one though.
I haven’t have fresh cherries in so long! This looks amazing!
I have a 5 lb bag of cherries right now that I get to enjoy all to myself too b/c the husband isn’t a fan. Life is good
I too love cherries — Jason isn’t a fan so that means more for me!
Mmm…that reminds me, i have cherries ready to eat in the kitchen right now!
Just gimme those cherries!
They look stellar
Pitting cherries SUCKS but it’s always worth it! SO GOOD!
Yum
I gotta start using more cherries like this, I have a bunch frozen from last year. Need to make room for this year because local cherries aren’t ready for another month(ish). The cherries in your bowl look so tempting, I’d probably pick them all off and eat them before digging in
sometimes the old tried & true simple breakfasts are the best!
How does Chris not like cherries?! That’s absurd! Although I wish Dave didnt like cherries….
Might be a texture thing? Not sure…he likes grapes + strawberries, but not cherries, unless they’re in a smoothie or something. StrangE!
I will be so sad when cherry season is no more.
I’m still working my way through a HUGE bag of costco frozen cherries…can’t quite bring myself to spend the money on fresh before I’m through. But this looks DELISH as usual!
Funny! I’m the opposite. I try to save the frozen and make them last as long as possible for smoothies and the fresh ones while they’re in season. hehe
Mmmm- an even BETTER combo is cherry- almond- chocolate and coconut! Super yummy and hearty, too
Oh boy, those cherries even LOOK tart! Definitely buying some when I grocery shop tomorrow!
They were actually sweet cherries…mmmm
I’ve been loving fresh cherries lately!
What is your secret to pitting cherries so neatly? I always hack away at mine and they look so unphotogenic afterward.
I just cut them with a knife all the way around, twist the halves apart and push the pit out with my thumb!
The easiest and cheapest way I have found to pit cherries is with a large paper clip. Just use the big end to go in by the stem, twist around once and the pit comes right out. Super easy.
Never would have thought that one!
Pitting cherries by hand is a pain bu worth it in the end. I don’t have a pitter, and frozen cherries just don’t hold up to the fresh
Mmm. My husband doesn’t like cherries either and I have devoured a bag myself this week too!
ohh yum! It’s been too long since I’ve had cherries!
May I ask what kind of camera you use/or would recommend?? Your photos are gorgeous! Especially of those sweet potatoes below…but I have a thing for taters
Hi there! You can find my camera info on my FAQ page.
Thanks so much!
thank you !
just thank you for the recipe – I tried this morning (to change my daily half banana PB oatmeal) and I loved it !
can’t wait to get more cherries to try again.
You’re so welcome!
looks awesome! and i highly recommend this product if you’re a cherry lover (like me): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0026RI3TU/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000NQ925K&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0AWZ95EY62NV1QP1JXZV
My mom got it for me and I LOVE it. It pits four cherries at once so you can pit your way through a few pounds in about 10 minutes. It’s changed my cherry-eating way of life
My sweetie doesn’t like cherries either (other than in pie!), so I’m always happy when we find ourselves with a bag of them and I get them all to myself. The same goes for blueberries
I love cherries, but I’ve never thought of putting them in oatmeal – great idea! I just tried the 1/2 rolled oats, 1/2 oat bran combo for the first time this morning, and it was delicious. So creamy! And I think it kept me full longer than just rolled oats.
Yes!! I think the oat bran definitely helps keep me full longer. Also when I bumped up from 1/3c to 1/2c total, it really helped. Glad you liked it!
Ashley, your breakfast looks fantastic! Where do you find amaranth? I could not find it at our grocery store tonight
Most grocery stores won’t have it. Whole Foods might have it in the bulk aisle and Bob’s Red Mill packages it. We have a local store, Natural Grocers, that is in some Western states. Not sure where you’re located but I know they have stores around the West. If none of those work, I guess you could always order online. Good luck!
I used the last of my fresh cherries from the WFs 2.99 sale in pancakes…wicked bummed that I didn’t think of it sooner, and am now out of cherries!
